Why is Flossing So Important?
Flossing is very, very important because it helps mechanically remove bacteria and plaque from in between your teeth. Brushing your teeth only removes the plaque from the surfaces of your teeth, but it doesn’t get in between the teeth. So, we need to use floss to remove the bacteria so that it doesn’t cause tooth decay, bad breath, gingivitis, gum disease, and even heart disease.
How to Properly Floss Your Teeth
- Step 1: Wrap the floss around one finger on each hand – index fingers, thumbs, whatever is most comfortable!
- Step 2: Make sure the length of your floss is not too long or too short. If you can touch your thumb together while the floss is taut, you’re good to go!
- Step 3: Gently ‘seesaw’ the floss back and forth in between your teeth.
- Step 4: Wrap the floss around each side of the tooth using a “C” shape motion.
- Step 5: Repeat steps 3 and 4 on each tooth on your top and bottom jaw!
