Did you know that your allergies can affect your oral health!? You might not think the two would be related, but when we have colds or are all stuffy from allergies, our mouths are at a greater risk for certain things.

How Do Allergies Impact My Oral Health?

Dry Mouth

When we are stuffy from allergies or a cold, we tend to breathe through our mouths more. The more we breathe through our mouths, the dry our mouths can be.

When you have dry mouth, you are much more prone to cavities because of the lack of protection from your saliva.

Teeth Shifting

Breathing with your mouth open can also cause your teeth to shift. This mostly applies to children but can affect adults who tend to breathe through their mouths a lot.

Sensitivity

Another issue that people can face when they have allergies is increased sensitivity in their back teeth. When your sinuses are backed up, they sit above your back teeth and can cause the root tips to become more sensitive to hot or cold.

How to Prevent These Things

Drink lots of water, use mouthwash, and be sure to brush and floss thoroughly. And, If you can, try to stay away from things that give your allergies.
