Some people enjoy getting their teeth cleaned annually or every six months. But for those who have a genuine fear of equipment poking around inside of their mouths, the dentist can be scary. So how do we conquer that fear?
A Common Fear
You’re not alone when it comes to being afraid of the dentist. Many people suffer from this fear all around the world. From the equipment used inside the dental office to the idea of needing a cavity filled or a root canal, everyone gets scared to go to their local dentist.
At Rockside Family Dental Care, we’ve seen tons of patients who are fearful of a routine checkup. There are numerous reasons why a patient might be a little off about visiting the dentist. Some of those reasons are usually developed at an early age.
We see many patients who have told us that their fear stems from horrible experiences as children or throughout their early life. These fears tend to carry over into our older minds, leading to some essential dental situations needing care.
How To Get Over The Fear Of The Dentist
At Rockside Family Dental Care, we understand how scary it might be for patients to come inside a dental office. Luckily, we take some measures to maintain any fear a patient might have.
One of the ways we assist patients over their fear of dentistry is through sedation. We will sometimes give a patient a small pill ahead of time to help ease their anxiety during their dental office visit. The medication is called “Halcion,” a sleeping pill that often reduces anxiety symptoms.
But we also have patients who will hold the hand of their loved ones in the room during their procedure. This is typically seen in our younger demographic as children want their parents in the room with them.
In the end, it does depend on your comfort level. We each have a certain amount of fear of the dentist’s office, but overcoming that fear can be completed through any form of assistance. It all depends on the patient and how comfortable they feel at the visit.
