How do I get my kids to be comfortable at the dentist?
Most parents have to deal with children not wanting to go to the dentist, whether it be the scary dentist father played by Sir Christopher Lee in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory or the simple thought of a person drilling into their teeth.
Healthy and regular dental habits and routine dental visits can be hard for children.
In the video above Alycia, a dental hygienist at Rockside Family Dental Care, talks about ways to form good dental habits!
Get in a Routine
Get excited with your kids about brushing and flossing twice a day. Set good examples as parents or guardians, and make sure the routine you want your children to have you keep as well. That could mean flossing and brushing with them to show them the right way to brush and floss.
Show the Dentist in a Positive Light
This can be achieved by just talking about the good things that the dentist does, or even bringing the kiddos with you to the dentist office for your appointments.
Use their Favorite Animals or Characters
This tactic works well with children who love dinosaurs and lions with their big teeth that food gets stuck in. Someone needs to get that out of their teeth. Winnie the Pooh eats all that honey, and he needs to brush his teeth as well. Look to the villains in classic movies like Star Wars; the Emperor had decrepit teeth from years of not brushing and flossing.
Another way to promote brushing is to have your children practice brushing their toy’s teeth to show proper technique.
